The Big Story No One is Talking About: Cyber Attack on 4.3 Million Mortgages & Payments Cannot Be Made!

❓What’s going on here: Mortgage servicing firm Mr. Cooper has been under a cyberattack for over a week, which disrupted customer access to the company's site and payment platform. In other words, customers cannot make payments. The attack was initiated by an unauthorized third party who gained access to certain technology systems, prompting Mr. Cooper to lock down its systems and temporarily disable online mortgage payments.

💣 Why does it matter: Mr. Cooper is one of the largest mortgage servicers in the U.S., serving around 4.3 million customers with a significant mortgage servicing portfolio. Mr. Cooper is still obligated to make their payments to investors, however, they need their 4.3 million borrower mortgage payments to make thei investor payments. So, this could get ugly.

☢️ Potential market risk: The incident could create a bigger problem in the secondary market and capital markets creating contagian risk, if Mr. Cooper cannot make investor payments. Something you want to keep an eye on.
